The open source PyTorch, created by Soumith Chintala at Facebook, is among the most popular machine learning frameworks used in the world.
In 2018, Google open-sourced its technique for training general purpose language representation models using the enormous amount of unannotated text on the web (known as pre-training). Named Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (or BERT), it is a question answering system that can be trained in about 30 minutes.
Hardware upgrades and faster chips should help make open source frameworks even faster—and popular—in the years to come.
