Siemens and ABB are each building a new kind of distribution center underwater. Their subsea power stations would connect to wind turbines, generators, or power plants and could someday enable underwater factories. These power grids include transformers, switch-gear and variable-speed drives, and cabling so that operators back on land can monitor and adjust all of the systems. Testing should begin this year.
